CHALLENGE:
Carefully construct new independent living and commons areas while respecting a historic structure and minimizing disruption of daily life for existing residents.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In an effort to fill in some of the programming gaps of this CCRC, the team tackled a significant renovation of the existing structures.
  • The site posed a challenge in accommodating these new components due to its position on the Historic Register in the City of Evanston. With consideration of these restrictions, the design team developed the western edge of the campus.
  • An intensive dialogue took place with the surrounding neighborhood to develop consensus on an acceptable solution for placement, size, scale and detailing of the new structure.
  • The three (16-18 bed) skilled nursing households introduce a new standard of person-centered care after much discussion with the State of Illinois.
  • The library located near the building entry has become a hub for socialization in the community.
  • The lower level features an indoor pool, resident theater, fitness center and a salon.
  • Due to the tight site restraints, the building wings above serve as the porte cochere much like a hotel in an urban setting.
