The EFA Design Showcase highlights outstanding innovative design solutions in new or renovated senior care environments across the nation. Selected projects are published each year in the Spring issue of Environments for Aging.

From thoughtful community connections to seamless indoor-outdoor amenity spaces and elevated dining options, this project reinforces some of the latest trends in senior living.

The design team worked with Methodist Retirement Communities (MRC) to integrate this enticing senior living community within a new, vibrant mixed use neighborhood development. The design of the community was intended to inspire healthy living and encourage active aging while reinforcing connectivity and fostering relationships. The community includes independent living, assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation and ample amenities across all levels of care.

Stevenson Oaks was designed with every movement of residents, visitors and staff in mind. Amenities, space planning and design details focus on socializing, spirituality, and healthy living—spaces and destinations to keep residents active, mobile and connected.

Lakeside at Waterman Village | Mount Dora, FL
CCRC/Life Plan – Second Place

The Senior Housing News (SHN) Architecture & Design Awards, celebrates unique projects and companies that improve seniors’ lives through innovative design. The expert team of judges recognized cutting-edge design, excellence and innovation across 15 senior living project categories.

This project responds to current market conditions and consumer expectations with distinct housing options that provide choice and elevated health services for seniors in the Mount Dora area. The foundation and main entry point of the new campus, called Lakeside Grand, is an 87-unit, mixed use style independent living apartment building with an amenity-rich clubhouse. By positioning 52 garden homes adjacent to the clubhouse, the design leverages this amenity offering while creating a desirable neighborhood-style living option. A highlight of the project is the addition of two, 16-unit Lakehouses—a unique housing option that addresses consumer demands while meeting the need for increased density on campus. The project also includes a sensitively designed memory care component to complete the continuum of care on campus.

Arabella at Belle City Square | Racine, WI

Best Adaptive Reuse – Gold Award

The MHN award continues Arabella’s list of national accolades for design excellence in the adaptive reuse category. The project was also honored with a NAHB Best in American Living award as well as a MFE Award. Arabella was the first project completed at Belle City Square, a comprehensive, multi-phased redevelopment of the historic Racine Malted Milk Company by J. Jeffers & Co. The project offers a mix of market-rate and affordable apartments: 60 units ranging from studios to three bedrooms. A unique offering of this project is first-floor units with private exterior entries. A signature design feature and amenity is the transformation of a vaulted single-floor factory space into a communal atrium. The design solved a circulation need by creating an accessible corridor connection between two wings of apartments. This provides residents with flexible gathering and work areas on two levels.

Work continues on this extensive site. Since the completion of Arabella, The William has opened, offering 90 units in the property’s iconic clock tower building. And 2023 will introduce two new construction properties—Avenue North and Avenue West.

Each project reinforces the original intent of the Belle City Square development—to create a town center and draw people into a hub of activity while providing residents a sense of safety and security in new market-rate and affordable living spaces.
