CHALLENGE:
Deliver a design solution that respects the history of the site and its connection to the greater community, while balancing the concerns of the surrounding community.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In order to maintain the prominent corner at the southern end of Cedarburg, the historic St. Francis Borgia church was preserved as an anchor with the school portion planned for demolition.
  • Two, separate 30-unit buildings connected by underground parking and a landscaped courtyard were designed to complement the church.
  • A third, nine-unit building was planned across the street with a townhome configuration. This building provides the scale and proportion desired by the greater community. The units are presented with first floor access and front porches that look onto the street, a trait more common with the residential neighborhood.
  • Building consensus was an important aspect of this project to gain community approval and make neighbors feel comfortable with an architectural style that complements the surrounding neighborhoods.
