CHALLENGE:
Masonic Homes of Kentucky is an organization of “Passionate People. Inspiring Lives.” In their 150-year history, they have learned a thing or two about community connectivity and gaining inspiration from the city they call home—Louisville. To continue their esteemed reputation of serving area seniors and to position the campus for future success, they wanted to strategically embed new units, services and amenities within the historic campus.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AG worked with Masonic Homes Kentucky to explore opportunities to rejuvenate the entire campus with strategic master plan additions. Each project was phased to build on the success of the previous one.
  • Miralea was the first addition to the campus, a much-needed independent living option that was introduced during the depths of the 2008-2009 economic downturn.
  • The project features simplified unit choices among the 90 apartments and 12 cottages with a focus on providing an engaging commons area that promotes wellness, independence and socialization.
  • The immediate success of the project spurred the addition of 30 units as well as a large gathering space.
  • Due to the speed of occupancy at Miralea, Masonic Homes Kentucky wanted to keep pace with the area’s booming long-term care industry by embarking on another project—Meadow Active Lifestyle Community.
  • This complex provides an additional 120 independent living units in a setting with an arts and culture focus.
  • The project explores the power of art to enhance health and well-being and encourages an active lifestyle.
  • At the same time, the AG team also designed an updated assisted living community called Grove Pointe to support the community’s reputation for quality healthcare services.
  • With each building, AG developed an architectural vocabulary that pays homage to the origins of the Frederick Olmstead-designed campus.
  • The materials palette and detailing respect the historic guidelines of the campus while providing spaces that support a modern mix of services and amenities to continue the legacy of this exemplary community.
