WOODLANDS AT CANTERFIELD

Designing with a biophilic mindset and embedding the community into an existing residential neighborhood to continue the theme of “being a good neighbor” established with CedarStone.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The project exemplifies a successful partnership between a for-profit owner (Nelson) and a not-for-profit operator, Franciscan Advisory Services.
• The planning prioritized biophilic design principles including enhanced indoor and outdoor connections designed to support programmed activities and spontaneous interactions between residents and staff.
• The placement of the intricate multi-floored assisted living building on a terrain that drops 25 feet provided the opportunity for creative grading design elements and reduced the overall profile of the building to fit into the existing residential neighborhood.
• To maximize the size of the building and site amenities, a series of retaining walls tie into the surrounding elevations and create a layered landscape aesthetic.
• By creating trail connections to a variety of on-site amenities and the larger community of West Dundee, Woodlands offers a variety of opportunities that promote quality of life and a healthy lifestyle.
• To better serve the needs of older adults AL offers a range of studios, and one- and two-bedroom apartments. Memory support unit options include one-bedroom floor plans, studios, and companion rooms.
• A focal point of the design is the building’s two-story volume entrance with a custom woodland-themed art piece, a nod to the former orchard located on the site.
• Various details continue the woodland concept throughout the amenity spaces, including a tree-themed sculptural element that is back-lit at the community’s assisted living and memory care resident entrances, gilded leaf wallcoverings in the dining room, and abstracted vibrant water photography in the bistro.
• Amenity spaces promote choice and healthy living, including a variety of dining options (pub lounge, bistro, and formal restaurant), a fitness studio, a full-service salon, a theater, a multipurpose room, club rooms, and a library.
