CHALLENGE:
To design an urban infill project that incorporates local history and in-demand amenities–a complex that offers seniors a vibrant lifestyle within a walkable urban environment.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • By tearing down an existing church, school and convent, the site (a quarter of a city block) provided the space needed for 118 units of independent living, memory support and assisted living.
  • The design solution evolves the operator’s successful senior living model by translating a horizontal suburban configuration into a vertical urban solution.
  • Cherished artifacts from the Italian community, such as stained glass, stonework, the church sign, date stones and a signature rose window, are some of the details incorporated into the exterior and interior design of the new church as well as throughout the senior living community.
  • The interior design incorporates a mix of local materials, such as Cream City brick, with vibrant colors and themes found in Italy, specifically Porticello, Sicily.
  • The new church is a featured amenity that plays an important role in fostering the minds and active lifestyle of seniors while deepening the connection to the surrounding neighborhood.
  • The community includes a long list of desirable amenities, including a private outdoor gathering space–The Piazza–as well as a casual dining venue with grab-and-go options–The Trattoria.
  • The location allows seniors to take advantage of the greater area amenities, such as dining, theaters, museums, shopping, entertainment, the lakefront, the RiverWalk, the “Hop” (Milwaukee’s streetcar), and all the city has to offer.
